Polly Bemis, 1923
TitlePolly Bemis, 1923
DescriptionPoly Bemis sitting outside a cabin in Warren, Idaho. Polly, also known as China Polly, was a dance hall girl from San Francisco who later became a goldsmith in the area of Warren, Idaho. She married Charles Bemis, a mining camp gambler from Connecticut, in 1894. Popular Idaho lore claims that Charles won Polly in a poker game. However, other accounts claim that Charles proposed marriage to Polly after she spent two weeks nursing him back to health from a bullet wound he received in a robbery attempt at his home.
