Fleet of catering cycles, ca. 1930
TitleFleet of catering cycles, ca. 1930
DescriptionA fleet of Henry Thiele's catering cycles in front of Sovereign Hotel. The signs on the sidecars read "Henry Theile Box Lunches Delivered." Thiele stands in the doorway of the hotel.

German-born Thiele trained under European chefs and became an expert candy maker before immigrating to the United States in 1904. After serving as chef at numerous hotels and operating independent restaurants, he joined the staff of the Benson Hotel in Portland as Chief Steward in 1914. He opened his own restaurant in 1921, and by 1928 had acquired two coffee shops, seven private dining rooms, a banquet and dance hall, and a main dining room. As a side-light, he was chef at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition and operated numerous concessions there. He also ran an active catering business. In January 1932, he purchased the Gambrinus Brewery at W. Burnside and N.W. 23rd Avenue in Portland, and on the site he built a large Mediterranean style restaurant. The popular restaurant, which beared his name, featured an extensive menu including many German dishes such as his famous German pancakes.
